The area surrounding Pha Yao has, in itself, has much to offer the traveler by road. Along Highway 1, there is a good deal of unspoiled countryside. A little further down the road 1 km down a dirt track at KM 666.8 is the cave of Tham Pha Thai. Inside this vast, cathedral sized cavern beside a huge stalagmite, sits an image of the Buddha which is dramatically illuminated by light traveling through a hole in the cave's ceiling. The town of Pha Yao is pleasantly situated on the Pha Yao lake along which there are many nice places to eat. Inhabited as early as the bronze age, Pha Yao has a good deal of historical significance. Consequently, there are many legends regarding this small, aged city. Things to do and see: ~Wat Li: The abbot of this temple has, over several years, collected a large amount of artifacts from the surrounding countryside which are on display. The temple is located in the center of town. ~Wat Sikom Kham: Located just outside of town on the the shores of the lake, this is the main temple of Pha Yao. According to legend, the site was chosen by Lord Buddha himself when ha saw a bird plant a seed which instantly grew into a tree providing the Buddha with shade from the sun. Another legend has it that this area was once a march that suddenly and inexplicably transformed into solid land. At this temple there are many interesting things to see. It is the home of Phra Chao Ton Luang, a 16 m high ancient Buddha image that is much revered. Outside in the garden there is an educational complex that contains morbid scenes of Hell with figures ranging from dinosaurs to Chinese goddesses. See if you can find E.T.!
