Phisanulok

Located on the Nan River where it connects to the Khwae Noi River, Phitsanulok served as Thailand's capital for 25 years. Being a river town, it's the only province in Thailand where its still legal to reside on a houseboat though no new houseboats are permitted. Larger and with more to offer as a city than its neighboring Sukothai, Phitsanulok is a nice place to set up a base for visiting the Sukothai Historical Park which is only a one hour drive from town, as well as the many temples, shops and markets within town. Also nearby are the wildlife sanctuaries and national parks of Thung Salaeng Luang and Phu Hin Rong.

Things to do and see:

~Wat Phra Si Ratana Mahathat:

Also called Wat Phra Si or Wat Yai, this is one of the most famous and revered temples in Thailand. In the temple resides the Chinnarat Buddha, one of Thailand's most famous of bronze images. The temple is located next to the bridge along the Nan River.

~Buddha-Casting Foundry:

This small factory is renowned for its creation of Buddha statues of all sizes. Visitors are welcome to come and witness the manufacture of bronze Buddha images. The foundry is located on Wisut Kasat Rd. close to the Phitsanulok Youth Hostel and is open daily from 8:30am to 4:30pm.

~Sukothai Historical Park:

As one of Thailand's world heritage sites, the striking ruins of old Sukothai encompass a vast area and are numerous. The central part of the ancient city contains most of the sites as well as a few ponds which at one time served as moats. Housed within old city walls, the central part of old Sukothai contains many beautiful old Wats (temples) as well as the Ramkhamhaeng National Museum but there are also many worthwhile neighboring sites outside the city walls. The park is about an hour's drive from town and is open from 6am to 6pm. The park is divided into five zones: central, northern, southern, eastern and western each charging a 20 Baht admission fee.
